The Dick Beeler Crazy Cove is our next club swim on Sunday, July 13. Sign in is 7:30-8:15 AM. Pilot and helper briefing is at 8:15 AM. Swim briefing is at 8:30 AM. Jump is at 9:00 AM. Food and festivities will follow. We will need a few pilots and a few special helpers. If you are not swimming and need a help for Golden Gate or Alcatraz, this is a great opportunity. While this is not a Qualifying Swim for Golden Gate or Alcatraz, it is a fun time, so come on down!
Here’s a little story about Dick Beeler, the man after whom this swim was named, as researched by Rich Cooper
Dick Beeler was born in 1921, swam for the University of Texas, and began swimming at the Dolphin Club in 1969. His profession was editing magazines. At the club he was very well liked and became the leader of a group of enthusiastic noontime swimmers. He was know for designing “crazy” but challenging courses around the cove. Sadly, he died in 1981 after a noon swim. An annual swim and trophy was established in his honor. The swim was intended to be a crazy but difficult swim, even counting as an out-of-cove qualifier.
